Spirulina is a blue-green algae (Cyanobacterium) that is cultivated, dried and then ground into a fine powder. The Aztecs were known to harvest it from Lake Texcoco in Mexico where it was prepared and consumed for its rich nutritional contents. It is a good vegan source of iron and protein and it has been proposed that, gram for gram, Spirulina may be the single most nutritious food on the planet. It contains all of the essential amino acids and is a rich source of B vitamins, Chlorophyll and Phycocyanin.
Spirulina is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory and is excellent for improving the health of the gut microbiome. There is also evidence that Spirulina could help improve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis and may also support the immune system and nervous function.
Spirulina can help lower total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol, and triglycerides – which are all risk factors for heart disease – while also increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol.
